What is the diffence between Propane and Butane?

Propane and Butane are both 'Liquid Petroleum Gas' commonly know as 'LPG'.The physical properties of both gases are fairly similar, either gas can be used on board. In the UK Butane comes in Blue bottles and Propane in Red bottles. Butane is more commonly used on yachts releasing more energy per litre than propane and is more commonly avaliable (See Camping Gaz) but has one major disadvantage. Butane will not work in very cold weather, below freezing it will loose its pressure (Liquid butane boils at -2C, below or near this temperature it remains liquid giving off no gas). If you live aboard all year or plan to sail to high lattitudes Propane is the gas to use.

How long do flexible LPG hoses Last?
The British Standards recommend that flexible LPG hoses are replaced every 5 years. This is in part due to the aggressive nature of LPG, it slowly takes the plasticiser out of the hose material. Additionally other enviromental factors can cause the material to perish. It is important to use flexible hose that is designed for use with LPG. In the UK this is made to and will be marked with BS 3212:1991 (Type 2 (Orange) for HIgh pressure OR Type 1 (Black)for Low pressure) and the date of manufacture (mm/yy). In practise unless there is a record of when the hose was fitted it is best to replace any hose that has a manufacturing date more than five years old.
Many new yachts built in Europe have hoses made to other standards and are often have a tag marked 'Replace before' and a date. Again if this date is passed it is best practice to change the hose.
Flexible hoses that are attached to gimbaled appliances can be prone to chafe. It is worth checking these regularly.

What is Camping Gaz?.
Camping Gaz is a brand of bottled Butane. The compact bottle size is popular aboard many yachts with limited space in the Gas Locker. Although its not the cheapest way to buy bottled gas if you are off cruizing to foreign parts refills are available in many countries.
